1950 Hudson Super Six 4 Door Sedan
The Hudson Motor Car Company, often called simply Hudson Motors, was founded in 1909. Joseph L. Hudson, owner of the renowned Detroit department store, was the primary investor in the company, created by eight individuals, including Roy Chapin and Howard Coffin, former employees at Olds Motor Works. In the first year, Hudson Motors sold 4,000 of their original 4 cylinder models. This represented the highest number of first year sales of any car company to that point, and quickly earned Hudson respect in the American auto market.
For consignment, a 1950 Hudson Super Six 4 door sedan, with a title verified 45,071 actual miles and a numbers matching engine. A low slung curvaceous bullet with curved lines and rounded surfaces for this beautifully designed car. Adorned with all the proper trimmings, plenty of stainless moldings on the side and around the glass.
Exterior
Rounded steel panels are all draped in Naples Green over Nile Green in two tone splendor in which the lower panel of color rises slightly to the front fender and rounds out in back, contouring the profile body lines. And in the profile is where the design excels as the windows reduce gradually in size towards the rear and follow the sweeping, descending roof line. This all makes for a unique shape that is balanced by the forward leaning front fenders, hood and fender ornaments, and the large visor over the windshield. A finale in back of the rounded trunk and rear of this vehicle with an oval for the rear glass, two large chrome bezel tail lights in shield format, and a big badge for the middle of the trunk lid. A bumper below is showing well and a shout out to the wonderful design, right down to the door handles and stainless window trimmings. The front bumper is nothing short of a work of art. Wide whites complete our tour and wrap 15-inch black wheels with shiny standard issue Hudson wheel covers. The paint and metal show very well and we could not find any glaring imperfections on the exterior.
Interior
With a swing of the door we see door panels that are covered in Saddle broadcloth and a 3 dimensional inset with a chrome mid panel sill. These panels hold the door actuator and window crank as well as the brown vinyl covered armrest and header. There's some wear on the surrounding leather, but all door panels are intact. Inside, the front bench featured pleated design in Saddle leather and the rear bench mirrors this design. Other than some soiling on the shell of the front seat, they are both in good condition. Upfront is a very nice original dash finished with a gauge cluster in polished metal with black faced gauges with ivory deco numerals. More polished panels reside in the brown dashboard and an air conditioning unit is mounted underneath. This amazing dash is fronted by the original brown bakelite steering wheel with its chrome horn ring. The original tan mohair headliner is above and below the floors are flooded with brown loop carpeting covered in tan mats. The voluminous trunk has a spare and lots of spare space, all covered with a fitted carpet mat.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, within the unrestored engine bay sits the numbers matching 262ci L-head inline 6 cylinder engine. It is fed by a rebuilt 2-barrel carburetor, and there is a 3-speed manual transmission on the back. The rear axle weighs in at 4.10 for the gear ratio. We would qualify the engine bay and its contents as clean, driver quality. Drum brakes occupy the front and rear wheels.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath means it has its fair share of road dirt, evident oil on the pan and transmission, some surface rust, and welded areas at the rear U-bolts. But there is no invasive rust nor an over abundance of grime build up. A single exhaust leads to a stock style muffler before existing via a chrome tip under the rear bumper. Suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
Sitting in this car will make you feel small even if you're big. The cavernous cabin was built for comfort and you can stretch out and relax as you steer this torpedo shaped behemoth around, as we did. The Super Six idles very smoothly, drives very well, has good acceleration, and exhibits bias free braking. Of all the operational items, only the horn and clock did not work. Everything else did. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Hudsons are one of the cars of the era that bucked the system and created an immediately recognizable shape. This one presents in striking green hues, four doors, two large bench seats, and a lot of presence. Measure your garage because this car is about 200 inches long. Of course, if you're adding it to a collection in your warehouse, size does not matter. Based on its serial number, this car was built in October of 1949 making it among the earliest 1950 cars and one of just 121,408 Hudsons, (all models), built for that model year.
